About Finland

Finland is called 'the land of the thousand lakes', as inland lakes and rivers make up 10% of the country. Large areas of forest cover almost two thirds of the land mass. Finland has a population of 5.5 million, around a million of whom live in and around the capital city, Helsinki.

The capital and surrounding area produces a third of the country's GDP. In terms of purchasing power per capita, Finland is ranked as number 11 out of 42 European countries. Retail turnover per m2 of sales area lies between 5,500 to 6,500 Euros, and is among the highest in Europe.

The forestry, technology and metal industries are Finland's most important revenue sources. In recent years the service sector has become increasingly important and now employs two thirds of the workforce.
